Bilateral Lower Limb Solutions

Bilateral lower limb prosthetic needs will vary depending if you are a bilateral below knee, bilateral above knee or a below knee on one side and an above knee on the other side.

Bilateral Lower Limb Prosthetics

Below Knee Prosthesis

Transtibial amputation, also known as, below knee amputation, is one of the most frequently performed limb amputation surgeries. A transtibial amputation is one that is below the knee joint and above the ankle, a below knee prosthesis is used to replace this part of the missing leg.

A below knee prosthesis is comprised of a suspension sleeve, socket, pylon and prosthetic foot, with the socket being the most important part of the prosthesis. Different factors are used to determine what type of socket, suspension and prosthetic foot will be best for your individual functional level.

Above Knee Prostheis

A transfemoral amputation, also known as an above knee amputation, is an amputation at or above the knee joint. An above knee prosthesis is used to replace this part of the missing leg.

An above knee prosthesis is comprised of a suspension sleeve, socket, prosthetic knee, pylon and prosthetic foot, with the socket being the most important part your prosthesis. Different factors are used to determine what type of prosthetic knee componentry will be best for your individual functional level.

Bilateral Lower Limb Prosthetics Process

Working as a team, we will make a prosthetic device for you based off information we gather during the evaluation phase. The first step in the prosthetic fitting process is to take an impression of your residual limb. At POSI, this impression is captured by hand casting as this method provides a very intimate fit that will maximize comfort and support.

Bilateral Lower Limb – POSI Team Support

At POSI, we understand the unique challenges you will face after an amputation. We work with you and your caregivers through those challenges, we share resources, we coordinate peer support and we work with your rehabilitation team to ensure progress is being made.

The prosthetic process and prosthetic leg componentry offerings are the same for a bilateral amputee as a unilateral amputee. At POSI, we have many bilateral lower limb amputees who are living a full active life and we would welcome you to our office to meet a peer with the same amputation level.
